Model soldier Lei Feng, characterized as a selfless and modest figure that was devoted to serving the people, has become a cultural icon representing selflessness, altruism and dedication in present-day China. On March 5, 1963, Chairman Mao Zedong started the "Learn from Comrade Lei Feng" campaign by calling upon the nation to carry on Lei Feng's spirits. The day of March 5 is thus established "Lei Feng's Day", on which voluntary community events are arranged.
