Sex-themed painting show in Beijing causes dispute

Transtlate A young female artist's recent exhibition of her sex-themed oil paintings on the streets of downtown Beijing has roused controversy, according to a report on Sichuan Online.
Yi Yang's exhibition entitled "Sheng Nv -- Don't Get Married and Enjoy Deceiving Men!" encouraged young single females to reconsider marriage.
The 28-year-old artist, who is single and considered to be a "Sheng Nv" -- a woman in her late 20s or early 30s who does not have a boyfriend or husband -- displayed six of her oil paintings in Beijing on the last day of 2009. Signs tacked onto the license plate frames on her car, in which she transported the paintings, displayed the exhibit's slogan.
Passersby were attracted by Yi's artwork and gathered around her car to take photos. Some supporters said they believed she was very brave to express many females' opinion on the issue, despite great social pressure placed on them to get married by a certain age. Others said they thought her behavior was too extreme.
Yi told the media that her artwork was done in a manner that exaggerated sexiness, fashion and hyperrealism. She said she decided to display her paintings in the capital's central business district where many women work, to serve as a wake-up call for them to resist pressure from their families and society to get married.
Yi revealed in the report that she believes the essence of marriage for women is slavery. So she hoped her exhibition would alert single women to reconsider the meaning of marriage and contemplate what they really want from life. She also said she hoped all women could find their true loves in the end.
The "Sheng Nv" (literally left-over-women) phenomenon is seen by many in China as a social problem. In Beijing alone, the number of single women has surpassed 500,000.
